Supsan, the largest valve producer in Turkey, has earned the Zero Waste Certificate, a recognition of its Zero Waste Management System. The company has provided training to its employees on zero waste, emphasizing waste recycling for repurposing and has set future goals to reuse wastewater and cut carbon emissions.
Supsan, a part of the Borusan Group, initiated its Zero Waste Management System project in 2022 in compliance with the Zero Waste Regulation. By January 2023, the system was fully operational, earning the company its Zero Waste Certificate. The waste management system, implemented across office buildings and campuses, is designed to progressively reduce waste and increase recycling and upcycling each year.
Huge increase in recycling
The General Manager of Supsan, Atınç Ocak said that the company revised its waste management strategy with an objective to reduce waste drastically every year. He stated, "We continue our sustainability efforts in line with our strategy on climate, people, and innovation. Accordingly, we are converting the waste resulting from our activities into usable materials through recycling and upcycling. Within the scope of our zero waste practice, we classify the wastes generated in our office activities and recycle them."
Ocak shared that the first phase of Zero Waste Management targeted office buildings and employees and added, “Staff underwent extensive training provided by the Environmental Management Consultant. We established separate waste collection areas for paper, plastic, glass, and metal. We ended purchasing disposable plastic items. We're reducing paper usage as we have created awareness."
Ocak further revealed plans for water reduction and said, “We have installed a rainwater collection system in 2023. The collected rainwater will be used in various areas. We also have projects to repurpose wastewater from different water treatment systems within our facilities."
Ocak also mentioned that Supsan is working towards decarbonizing its production, with new projects in the pipeline to improve efficiency, conserve energy, and cut carbon emissions. "We are renewing our machines at our technology center during the year to boost our contribution to the circular economy."
