In addition to expanding its product portfolio with new projects, Supsan, Türkiye’s largest manufacturer of engine valves, reuses 6 tonnes of steel hulls each year, contributing to the circular economy and sustainability. When it comes to machinery revision, the company breathes new life into machines that have reached the end of their economic lives rather than purchase the machinery it needs on its production line from abroad.
One of the Borusan Group companies, Supsan made a difference with an exemplary project with which it breathes new life into machinery that contributes to the circular economy as part of its sustainability efforts under the headings of climate, people and innovation. By renovating the machines in the machinery park that had come to the end of their economic life and using them on its production line, the company saved 6 tonnes of steel, 1.5 megawatt hours of energy and prevented the release of 1.3 tonnes of greenhouse gases. The company also contributes to the entrepreneurial ecosystem by working with start-ups and has supported the development of Turkish component and technology manufacturing companies.
Reducing Dependence on Foreign Sources in Machinery Investment
Stating that Supsan was working to make all its activities sustainable and revising all its business processes in line with its sustainability strategy, Supsan General Manager Atınç Ocak said: “The goal of our project to overhaul old machines and give them a second economic life was to contribute to the circular economy and do away with making investments in new machinery. To this end, we broke down old machine hulls into their component parts and gave them a new lease of life by adapting next-gen hydraulic, mechanical and electronic systems. We reuse 6 tonnes of steel hulls by making 3 machinery revisions in a year.
Support for Domestic Production
Underscoring the fact that the machines to be used on the production lines were not Turkish made and that they had made it their mission to support the Turkish entrepreneurial ecosystem and Turkish production, Ocak said: “When it comes to industrial production, we think that domestic production rather than importing machinery will help reduce the current deficit. With this project, which we developed outside of our main business of valve manufacturing, we created a team of experts specialised in electrical, electronic, mechanical and other systems. Turkish entrepreneurs lent us their support. As a result of the technical revisions, we took machines that had reached the end of their economic lives and made them meet today’s technological conditions in terms of OHS, environmental impact and technically. We met our need for machinery without having to depend on foreign sources. Our project generates savings in every sense; it helps mature the culture of sustainability in our company and brings our technology up to the levels required by the present day".
